Winner: Views That Inspire

🏆 Announcing Our Views That Inspire Prize Winner

We are proud to announce Robert Crea, Cardiac Sonographer at Epworth Hospital, as the winner of our Views That Inspire competition.

Robert’s winning entry, “Short Axis. Big Diagnosis,” demonstrates a right parasternal short-axis view of the ascending aorta revealing a Type A intramural haematoma. In the standard long-axis plane, the finding closely resembled a linear reverberation artefact, a powerful reminder of how critical pathology can be overlooked when confined to routine views.
It was only by rotating to an unconventional short-axis imaging plane that the true diagnosis became clear.

Robert shared that this image inspires him because it reinforces the importance of imaging a 3D structure from multiple planes, and that effective echocardiography demands curiosity, adaptability, clinical judgement, and the confidence to move beyond standard protocols.

This is exactly what we strive for in congenital heart echo:
  • Working with non-standard views to best define pathology
  • Adapting imaging to the clinical situation
  • Looking beyond protocol
  • Recognising critical findings and clearly communicating them

For capturing both technical excellence and the spirit of advanced echocardiographic practice, Robert has been awarded: 1st Prize: 2026 Foundation Seminar in Paediatric Echo Ticket and $500 Travel Support

Congratulations Robert – a well-deserved recognition of outstanding clinical insight and imaging skill.
